Doctrine

What We Believe

This church subscribes to the Westminster Confession of Faith as its doctrinal standard, a subordinate standard under Holy Scripture, which alone binds the conscience. We hold the ancient creeds of the church and affirm the five solas of the Reformation. Everything we confess is published here in full.

Our Doctrinal Standard

The Westminster Confession of Faith

We receive the Westminster Confession of Faith, together with the Larger and Shorter Catechisms, as a faithful summary of what Scripture teaches. It is a subordinate standard: Scripture alone is the supreme judge, and Scripture alone binds the conscience.

A short glossary

Our confessions use precise historic terms. These are what they mean. The vocabulary is explained; the theology is not simplified.

sola scriptura
Scripture alone. The Bible is the only written divine revelation that binds the conscience.
solus christus
Christ alone. Salvation is accomplished by the work of Christ alone, with no other mediator.
sola gratia
Grace alone. Salvation is a gift of God, not earned or achieved by any human effort.
sola fide
Faith alone. A person is counted righteous before God through faith, not by their own merit.
soli deo gloria
To God alone be glory. Because salvation is God’s work, the credit belongs to God alone.
subordinate standard
A confession a church binds itself to, which stands under Scripture rather than beside it. Scripture alone is supreme.
covenant of grace
God’s arrangement to save sinners freely through Christ, running through the whole Bible (Westminster Confession, ch. 7).
effectual calling
The work of God’s Spirit in which a person is drawn to Christ and made willing to come (ch. 10).
justification
God’s declaration that a sinner is righteous in his sight, on the basis of Christ’s work.
adoption
Being received into the family of God and given the rights of his children (ch. 12).
sanctification
The lifelong work of being made holy after being counted righteous (ch. 13).
perseverance
That those God truly saves he keeps to the end. They cannot finally fall away (ch. 17).
assurance
The settled confidence a believer may have of being in a state of grace (ch. 18).
regulative principle
That God may be worshipped only in the ways he has commanded in Scripture, not according to the imaginations and devices of men (ch. 21.1).
monergistic
God works alone. Used of the new birth: God gives spiritual life without human cooperation.
imputed
Credited to someone’s account. Christ’s righteousness is reckoned to the believer as their own.
catechism
Teaching by question and answer, an old method for learning doctrine by heart.
